Why Am I Still Single?

This is a very interesting question that somehow doesn't appear in my exams. If it did I wonder who would get the correct answer? I chanced upon two quizzes from Denise's blog. After doing the quizzes here are my results:

What can I say? Here are my viewpoints on my results:

1. Flirting - C

Okay, I guess I got a C in flirting. If got this for my module (hopefully not) I'll faint but if it's flirting, then it isn't a big problem. I guess I am bad at flirting. Is this good? I don't know.

Nothing much to talk about this as I got a C.

2. Physical - F

Lol...this is hilarious. I guess I am lousy at being physical. So what does it mean? Let me imagine:

Me: What are you doing?
Girl: Well, nothing. I accidentally brushed your hand only.
Me: Oh ok.
Girl: Seriously...you are not physical at all.
Me: What you mean?
Girl: Can you at least hold my hand while we walk? Sheesh! I can't believe I have to tell you to hold my hand.
Me: Hey, don't blame me. I got an F for "Physical" in a quiz.
Girl: -_-'''
Me: By the way, how do I hold your hand?
Girl: (faint)
Me: Oi...you okay or not?

Now you know why I got F?

3. Emotional - A

This is my only A in this quiz. I guess I am more of an emotional person than a flirtatious and physical person. It means that I can feel and understand the girl better than flirting and doing physical stuff (like playing hide and seek in NTU) with her. Okay, maybe hide and seek is not such a good idea. Especially in NTU. Can you imagine what can happen if that happens?

Aunty: Ah boy what you doing here?
Me: Shhh...I am playing hide and seek with my girlfriend.
Aunty: Aiyo. How old are you?
Me: I got a F for "Physical" so need to engage in more activities if not later my "Physical" module cannot pass.

Me: Aunty, your face how come look like my girlfriend's face arh? Suddenly got 3 horizontal lines and some vertical lines.
Aunty: (faint)
Me: Oi Aunty you okay or not?

C again! At least's it's not an F.

Second quiz: Your Dating Style


The result says this:

"You are all about being in a committed long term relationship. You are all about the love and security that it brings."

It's true. If I enter a relationship, I don't enter into one just so that we can play hide and seek in NTU, but to be serious in it. When emotions are involved, it's best not to play any games (including hide and seek) lest people get hurt emotionally.

This is pretty straight forward. The graph above says that I am mature (not really lah, I crack lousy jokes which only I myself laugh) and loyal (yes, I still remember how my pet fish died). If I combine this result with the previous quiz, can I say that a mature and loyal person won't be good at being physical and flirting but good at the emotional level? After all, it is the same me who did both quizzes.

Conclusion - Mature and Loyal = Committed Relationship

Coming back to the question "Why Am I Still Single?". The answer is pretty easy - I haven't met the right person yet. Maybe she's playing hide and seek with me...lol. Okay...okay...I talked to much rubbish already. Must finish up and read my lecture notes.

My First Week In NTU

It has been a week already since I stepped into NTU. My first week in NTU has been great and kinda slack (only lectures and no lab or tutorials).

Well, it's the first week after all, so it isn't really a good measure of how life would be life in NTU. I am kinda worried for the future though. Anyway,

here are some of the things I did/saw/experienced in the first week.

1. I met some of my friends and got to know my friends' friends. So in the end, I had more friends. Anyway, our lecture was suppose to start in the

afternoon but we reach there early in the morning to buy notes. It's a good thing that MSE has a service that prints and photocopies notes for their

students. My friend and I were kinda free, so we decided to crash a random lecture. Why? Because we haven't felt how it is like to be in a lecture

theater in NTU. We decided that whether the lecture was on Arts or Science wouldn't matter because we just wanted an experience. Just then, we

heard some sound from this lecture theater (I forgot the name but it is near to Lee Wee Nam Library with glass panels near the entrance). So we

crashed and entered it. Guess what the lecture inside was about...

It was on Fluid Mechanics! Wow! Such a chim-ology topic. Nevertheless, we sat in and listened. Quite interesting in that we learnt some stuff.

2. There was this day when I wanted to collect my Matric Card. So I went to my school but and queued up at the General Office.

Let me sidetrack a bit. The General Office and General's Office are two completely two different things...interesting.

Okay, back to the topic. So I queued up. When it was my turn, I asked the nice lady at the counter for my card. I looked through my list and showed

her my name and she went to check. While she check for the card, I saw a stack of notes and so I asked the lady whether I can take the notes (it

was some lab notes and since I had a lab module, I might as well take it). She said yes and that I should write my name in the list provided before I

take. Okay...fair enough. So I wrote my name and before I took the notes, the lady said that she couldn't find my card! Oh no! The sky is falling! My

card wasn't there! What happened? She then gave me a form to submit to SSC. Thankfully the SSC was near our school. So what to do, I filled the

form and was about to proceed to SSC when I remembered my notes. So I took one set. Another lady at the counter asked me why I wanted the

notes. I said that I had a lab module in my semester. She told me that it was for year 2. You can just imagine how paiseh I was when the students in

the General Office looked at me. They must have thought that I am some super on student. First, the matric card and now the notes. I cancelled my

name from the list and went to SSC. The people at SSC told me that my card would be ready on the 15th of August. Hopefully it's true.

3. Have you ever been to Popular in NTU? It's like some hidden room in the South Spine. It took my friends and I a few minutes before we could

locate it. It was like at the lowest level and had no banner or indication that it was there. Some more the dark corner which it was situated in

doesn't help.

The thing about Popular is that it's too POPULAR! The queue there was very long. So long that I decided not to buy anything (okay maybe I didn't

have enough cash but the queue was pretty demoralising). I looked at the books and saw that the price was kinda expensive. It was like $30 to

$50 for my course books. There was one book that cost $100+! Can you imagine! What kind of book is that! I mean that price is really high man.

Maybe it's the questions for this semester's exam (joking, but how good it is if such a book exists). So I decided to wait for MSE Day before I get a

few textbooks at a lower price.

4. MSE Day arrived. I got the books. The books were very heavy and I realised that I can use them for weights training. Imagine one Thomas'

Calculus on the left arm and another Introduction to Materials Engineering on the right arm and me walking up and down the North and South

Spine. I tell you, my face will be in the Nanyang Chronicle if I really did that. Hence my common sense (yes I have one) told me that I should read

the books and not use them for weight training. Maybe I'll do that at home.

5. Lectures are okay. The most interesting was the Introduction to Materials Engineering. It was cool! The lecturer was our dean Prof Boey himself.

He spoke in a very friendly way and was able to make the lecture theater laugh. Okay maybe not the lecture theater (I mean if the lecture theater

could laugh then it would really be a very scary lecture theater) but the students inside. He's a funny person.

Okay, so that's about what I did in this week. Next week onwards, the lectures, tutorials and lab will start. It's gonna be very interesting and exciting.

By the way, I have a lot of questions in my mind as a freshie. Below are the questions I have.

1. Should I do a minor? I mean a minor means 15 AUs more but your CV will look nice in it. But the question is does a minor really give you an

edge over other people?

2. Should I get a laptop? I don't stay in hall so I have a PC at home. So do I really need a laptop. And if yes, which one?

3. What electives (both PE and UE) should I do? If I am doing a minor, I'll use my UE for my minor, else I'll see what I can do with the UEs
(maybe take a course in bird watching and stamp collecting - joking only lah).

4. What strategy should I use in completing my 4 year course? Cramp all the electives in my first two years then concentrate on others or spread

evenly through the 4 years?

5. Should I go overseas like in GIP and INSTEP and GSS? It would look nice in my CV but do I have the time? Even more if I am doing Eureka

and a minor!

Conclusion? 4 years is defintiely not enough to have everything. So take everything one step at a time. I plan to do my first semester with the

default timetable provided and see how things go.

(Note: I may blog less as the university starts as one post can easily take me 1 to 2 hours. With that time, I can already finish one lecture recording...haha)

Freshmen Welcome Day 2007

I met one of my friends yesterday at Boon Lay Interchange before going to NTU for the Freshmen Welcome Day. Sounds big huh? Well, I reached there and had to decide to take the 179 or 199 bus. It wasn't a hard decision. The extremely long queue for the 179 bus really scared my friend and I. It was only like around 8.30am in the morning and the queue was like longer than those for TOTO and 4D. Seriously...that was the longest queue I've ever seen.

We took the 199 bus and eventually reached NTU. We were early so we went to the PC shop (forgot the name of it) to take some brochures in case we want to buy a laptop.

Let me digress a bit as I'm reminded of a chat my friend (another friend) and I had the day before. It went something like this.

Me: So will you be going for tomorrow's Freshmen Welcome Day?
Friend: Not really, but I will be going to NTU to buy a Mac.
Me: For what? You can find MacDonald's at Jurong Point wad. No need to go all the way to NTU.
Friend: I am talking about an iMac lah.
Me: Lol...I thought MacDonald's.

Lesson learnt? Not all Mac's can be eaten.

Anyway my friend and I took some brochures and scanned at the prices. They were around $2000. The most expensive one was around $3000. Do I really need a laptop? I am not staying in hall as I stay in Jurong. I guess I will see how things go.

After spending some time in the PC shop, we made our way to Nanyang Auditorium. It was our second time there. The first was on Thursday with the College of Engineering Orientation. The Nanyang Audi was big and looked kinda grand. At first we wanted to sit somewhere in the middle, however, one of the ushers there asked us to sit near the front. Oh fine...when we reached our seats, we were surprised to see a gown folded neatly on the seats. There was also a goodie bag with a wind breaker (my favorite item), a small torch, programe details and a pink slip which we could exchange for something. The emcees were Benny and Grace. The emcees told us to practice switching on our torches in a particular sequence. All I can say was that the practice wasn't enough. Everyone had their sense of timing and it was totally out of sync. Nevertheless, the emcees said that we did a good job.

Then some important people like Dr Su Guaning(president of NTU) came and sat chairs placed on the stage. Next were talks by three people. The one that really impressed me was the third speaker. His name is Mr Roderick Chia CEO of Spiral Communications. He told us that he wasn't good in English and was from the Normal stream. Yet despite that, he worked extremely hard and got a degree and a Masters later on. I was inspired by him. He didn't sit back and cry but instead worked hard towards his goal. His father didn't believe that he could go to university but he did! That man knew what he wanted and worked towards it! Inspiring!

After the three speakers was the recital of NTU Honour Pledge. I didn't know entering a university had such things. We wore the gown on our seats (so that was what the gown was for) and said the pledge. Reminded me of how we would take the pledge every morning in primary school.

The last speaker was Dr Su Guaning. He mentioned something about how the guys would be 2 years older than the girls in our batch. He said that it is good in that the guys can take care of the girls. However, he mentioned that not all girls would like to be taken care of. We all laughed. After that the important people sat with us to enjoy the following programs.

The first item was a dance by MJ (Modern Jazz). It consisted of two parts. The first had girls wearing black with their tummy exposed. Can you imagine how those professors sitting in the front would react when they see these girls dancing with exposed tummies? Lol. The next part of the dance was by guys dressed in some yellow kung-fu attire.

Next was a performance by ACES (some cheer leading group). This performance consisted of guys throwing girls in the air and catching them. Why don't they just sit around and play Monopoly? Maybe that's why I can never be in cheer leading. Anyway, there was one part of the performance that really caught my attention. It was the beginning. At the beginning one lady stood on the palms of this guy. They weren't the only pair to do so. However, in this particular pair, the guy's hands was unstable and as soon as I saw his palms moving I knew something bad was gonna happen. How true I was. The lady on top lost balance and fell backwards! The guy below fell along with her. Both landed with a loud thud amidst the loud music and cheers from the cheer leading group. It was very embarrassing...very embarrassing. I sympathize with them for such an unfortunate accident. Nevertheless, they continued on with the performance.

The last was a performance by international students titled "Voices of the World". It consisted of students from different countries singing a song that was familiar in their country. Then after all of them had sung their songs, everyone sang "I Believe I Can Fly". I think they chose that song because the theme was "Ready To Fly". Out of all the songs, the one I liked most was the first one sung by Indonesians. The song was "Bengawan Solo".

After everything ended, I went back home. So that was roughly how Freshmen Welcome Day 2007 was.

Now I have to plan my timetable, plan how I am going to do all my PEs, GERs, COREs...etc. Wah...entering university is not that easy. Nevertheless, I am excited...very excited :)
