Singapore Idol 2006 - The Result

When the results was announced, everyone screamed! I looked out of the balcony and saw people in their flats jumping and screaming. The last time this happened was during the World Cup. The screams lasted for minutes. I could see that Singapore Idol was able to connect with Singaporeans. If a show could make my whole neighbourhood scream, it must be something.

It came as no surprise. Hady Mirza won the competition just as I had predicted. Hopefully he won't be like Taufik who is only seen endorsing the Big Gulp from 7-Eleven. Jonathan wasn't too bad either. He was quite good. I guess he has his strengths. Hopefully he will pursue his dreams despite the loss.

I would say that this season's Singapore Idol is definitely much better than the previous one. Big Gulp anyone?

Singapore Idol 2006 - The Final Showdown

The Final Showdown. It reminds me of Taufik and Sylvester. Anyway, who do you think will emerge victorious? My guess will be Hady. Of course we will never know until tomorrow when the results are out.

By the way, what happened to the previous Singapore Idols? From what I know, Taufik is still advertising for 7-11 and Sylvester has kinda quiet down. Both of them are kinda quiet in the music scene. I wonder whether the 2006 winners will be much more prominent...I guess we can only wait and see.

My Computer Crash

I don't know if it's part of a computer user's life but my computer has recently crashed and hanged a few times already. As the title states, my computer crashed. It's not crushed. It's still salvage-able.

What happens is this. I switch on the computer but nothing appears on the monitor. I reset and switched on/off the computer but it's still a blank screen. By the way, it's not in my hobby to stare at blank screens.

There was once it started. I saw the words "Memory Test" and hey, my computer's back. Cool huh? I happily used my computer to check my blog and emails. Then all of a sudden, the computer hanged! Again! No!

I tried to reset, switch on/off and shield the CPU from all sorts of magnetic interference that may hinder it (okay maybe not). Then out of the blue, Windows XP appeared on my screen. I was delighted. It worked. Of course, it was short-lived, what isn't?. The computer hanged again just as I was scanning my computer for any nasties.

So you maybe thinking, "How does Steph write this post then?". Simple. The computer is back again. Hopefully, it won't be like the last few times when it suddenly hanged. As of now, I am running Trend Micro's HouseCall and McAfee's FreeScan in the background. They are free and run online without any installation needed.

I think I better end this post lest the computer hangs again. If it does, maybe I'll just go back to the abacus.

Terrorist Attack?

It happened quite some time ago. It was night time. I was watching the TV when suddenly loud explosions could be heard. They came one after another. Altogether there were about 5 explosions. No one screamed. If the 100 or so people living around me did not scream, I don't see why I should scream and make myself look stupid. I ignored it.

Then all of a sudden, an explosion happened over at my balcony! It was totally unexpected. I was watching my show when suddenly there was this loud "BANG"! I went over to the balcony and looked for anything that could land me a place in CSI.
I saw it. I borrowed my brother's camera handphone (yes, I don't have one...so if you are feeling nice, you can buy one for me) and took a picture of it.

Ugly sight huh? I noticed that there were some yellow lumps beside it. So I took another closer shot.

There was a kind of smell, an awful smell when I took the shot. Hopefully it wasn't a chemical attack. The smell was awful. If smelling it was bad, imagine touching it. Curiousity got the better of me and I decide to overturn the package to see what it actually was. For all you know there may be a face there or a hint at where it was made from. I overturned it and took a photo...

Yep, I know what you are thinking. It wasn't a terrorist attack whatsoever. It was just a prank someone played. Nope, there wasn't any face but a pair of broken pants. It's a "Fart Bomb" available at your friendly Mama Shop. Yet one thing remains a mystery for me. How did this item end up in my balcony? For your information, I stay at the six floor. My only deduction is that someone threw it from the levels above me and the wind blew it into my balcony. If you have any better deductions feel free to post it, I'll be glad to read them.

(If you were the one who threw this packet, please, I don't find it funny. Please don't throw such items and annoy your neighbours. It's not a nice thing to do. Disturbing people while watching TV may cause the victim to have severe headaches, stress or worse an asthma attack.)

Jasmine Tye Is Out

I expected it. Jasmine is out. I am not against her. She is good, but Hady and Jonathan are much better. I believe Jasmine may one day achieve her dream in singing.

Between Hady and Jonathan, I would say Hady.

Underaged Smoking

It was early in the morning. I just alighted one stop before West Mall and was waiting for 177. One thing was weird. There was this boy who alighted. Normally he would alight one stop earlier than me, but that day was different - he alighted together with me. Let's call him Boy. Along with us was three other school boys.

While waiting for my bus, I suddenly smelt smoke. It was cigarette smoke. The old uncle wasn't there nor was the middle-aged man. Who could it be? I turned my head and saw the three school boys smoking! Wow...they are like in lower secondary? About the age of 15? They shared a stick. While smoking, they looked around. One of them smiled and laughed throughout. He seemed to be the oldest among the group. I guess he was the leader of the group. The other two seemed fidgety - noobs I guess.

All of a sudden, Boy shouted for the three boys. Huh? Were they even together in a group? Their uniforms were different. He motioned for them to board a bus. The three looked agitated and the eldest of the three started to puff a few more puffs before throwing the cigarette on the floor.

I was stunned. They are young boys and have started to smoke. I know it's common but I saw it myself on that day. It's different hearing something as compared to when you actually see it. I guess we are after all living in a progressive society so it's no surprise that young kids are exposed to "new forms of release".

Clamped By The North East Line (NEL) Train Doors

Have you ever rushed for the MRT/NEL Train door because you were in a rush even though you might risk getting some part of you clamped by the doors? I have seen some of these incidents by myself.

There was once I was in the NEL Train going to Potong Pasir. Along the way in one of the stations, the door was closing. The friendly female voice as usual repeated the safety message "Doors Closing". However, I saw two tourists rushing for the door. They rushed in, both of them. After stepping inside they laughed and talked about what had happened in their language.

Another incident was in the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). This time, it was a man. I can't really tell if he's a local or not. He did the same thing. Jumped in, surprised everyone in the cabin and went to sit in one of the seats. It's quite a scene especially if you are in a long journey.

Personally I find such incidents quite dangerous. I mean, what if your hand gets stuck at the door and the door sensors don't seem to work? The result? A MRT whizzing along the lines with one hand outside visible for all to see. It's a definite turn-off especially for the IMF delegates here. They may think it's some form of protests. Imagine if it's underground. That hand may be cut or scratched or worse still...nevermind.

It was yesterday that I realised why people do such things.

I was again on my way to Potong Pasir (weird isn't it how all my MRT and NEL stories all come about because I was going to Potong Pasir). I alighted at Outram Park and walked down to the NEL station. As I was walking, the electronic message board flashed that the current train is leaving and the next would take 7 minutes. Since the train was leaving, I might as well take my time and walk slowly. I tapped my EZ-Link card and went down.

The train was still there! It did not leave yet. I ran down the escalator. Suddenly, the door lights flashed! The lady in charge of "Door Closing" messages must have forgotton to do her job! I ran towards the door, not knowing whether I was gonna make it. Should I stop or continue? The door was a meter away from me and it was closing! I doubled my speed and made a jump (reminded me how important the standing broad jump is in my Junior College days). I landed inside the NEL with a thump. Inside I could hear a teenage girl saying "Whoa...". It was embarrassing. There were a lot of them looking at me. I walked down the aisle towards the other cabins to avoid their stares.

Now I understand why people do such stunts. The reasons can be surmised in these points:

1. They are rushing for time. It is a pain to see the MRT/NEL Train whizz past you and you realise that the next train arrives in 7 minutes later.
2. It gives the participant an adrenaline rush. Kinda like those Indiana Jones movies only without the man-eating cannibals and all.
3. Teenage girls saying "Whoa". This is just to boost the participant's ego. Quite a useless reason I must say.

Do You Have A Girlfriend?

I was on duty today when one of the lady officers asked me a question.

Lady Officer: Do you have a girlfriend?

I was stunned by her question. There I was busy doing duty and out of the blue a personal question popped in front of me.

Me: What do you think? Do you think I have any?

I hit the ball back to her court.

Lady Officer: What kind of answer is that?

True, but it all started with your what-kind-of question you asked earlier.

Me: Come on, just guess. It's a 50-50 chance of getting the correct answer.

Lady Officer: No. I don't think you have.

I know reality hurts but she got the correct answer.

Me: True. Not bad. You got the correct answer. Why do you ask?

Lady Officer: No lah. I think you are too picky that's why.

It was then that she walked away. I guess she's busy with her work just as I am busy trying to find out what the heck is going on.

First of all, I would like to say that strange enough, my parents have quite an influence in this area of my life. Think of the UN Council. I am like some Third World country while they are the World Powers. You get what I am trying to say? So it is not because I am too picky or whatever, but I guess my parents are concerned and would like to assist in this area of my life. I can continue ranting on why they have the say in this area, but I guess I'll keep that for another blog post later on where I have the time. It's quite late now (around 10.20pm) and I need to sleep. Yes, my parents would like me to sleep early. Surprised? You should be, I am 20 years old.

Chin Hair

I was on the MRT the other day leaning against the glass panel near the door when this senior man stood beside me. I didn't really take much notice of him since he looked like your normal senior citizen without any mutant powers. I stared through the windows at the door admiring the scenery (okay, maybe it wasn't admiring. In the MRT you can only see so much of Singapore).

I was staring at the HDB blocks whizzed past when I saw the senior man's reflection on the window. He was doing something...weird. I turned my head and looked at him. He was using a pincer to pluck some strands of hair from his chin (I won't call it a beard or a goatee as what he had didn't qualify for both). After plucking, he looked at his "bounty" before tossing it onto the floor. That's disgusting! I looked at him but he ignored me. It seemed that he was engrossed with those strands of hair under his chin. I looked away deciding that HDB flats were more interesting than a senior citizen's chin hair.
