Problem With Firefox

Hm...I've noticed that some of those who came to my blog mentioned that my tag board clashes with the posts on my blog. It looks fine in my computer even though I change my resolution from 1024 x 768 to 800 x 600. I am currently using IE version 6 and it looks ok. But when I use Firefox version 1, the tag board is located over the latest post. I guess Firefox does not display my blog correctly. Sorry guys (those who are using Firefox).

IQ Questions

While I was in the Company Office, I was given two IQ questions. One was from Srgnt P and the other from a fellow OOT, J.

These are the questions...quite hard I should say. Hope that you guys out there will be able to help me solve these questions.

1. There are 12 balls. One of them is an oddball...it's either lighter or heavier than the rest of the 11 balls. Using a scale three times, how do you which ball is the oddball and whether is it lighter or heavier than the rest.

The scale in this question refers to a device that has two sides...the left and the right. You put things on both sides and see which side goes up or down. The side that goes down is heavier while the side that goes up is lighter. There are no readings or whatsoever.

2. How do you get 100 using four 9s. You can add, subtract, multiply, divide to get 100. Play around with the four 9s using the mathematical operators to get 100.

Hard aren't they?

This Week In NS...

I am back from camp again. Reached home at about 1300. Went to sleep after that and went out for awhile. A lot of things had happened during this one week...

1. OC Night

Our company, Mohawk Company, had our OC Night on Wednesday (230205). Had lots of fun that night. The different platoons came up with an item each and presented them to the whole company. Personally, I like Platoon 1's item...it was real funny. Their item was a funny imitation of Srgnt A. Haha...the whole company really laughed throughout their item. My platoon's item was quite ok. Our item was a depiction of life as a recruit in BMT (Basic Military Training). There were some funny stuff in our item such as recruits who are confused when orders are given to them. After that we had some snacks as a company before retiring for tomorrow's IPPT (Individual Physical Proficiency Test).

2. Range

We went to the Range from Monday to Wednesday. I was helping the recruits to load their magazines before they go and fire at the range. There were some recruits who misfired and got confined in the weekend...this means that they cant book-out...it's quite sad for them. These three days allowed me to experience live firing of our rifles. Man...was it LOUD!!. So much so that we had to put on ear plugs to protect our ears. My job as an OOT is to load magazines, distribute them and keep stock of them. I really had a lot of practice in loading the magazine as I was required to load around 100 rounds in a few minutes as the recruits need them for their shoot. Luckily, J was around to help me on Monday. It was really quite an experience.

Which Emoticon Are You?

Went to tickle.com and did the "Which Emoticon Are You?" test. Guess what...I am a Smiling Face...lol. It's true that I smile at times...but I thought that I would be a Laughing Face as I like to laugh. Anyway here's the result...

Stephen, the emoticon that represents you best is the Smiling Face

What's up, smiley? Somehow you just always seem to find a way to turn that frown upside down. Your upbeat attitude and friendly demeanor brighten up any room, including your favorite chat room.Like your classic emoticon counterpart, you're a staple on anyone's list. Boring days and sleepless nights are far more bearable when you're online to chat. Whether you're shooting the breeze, catching up, or giving out advice, you can cheer up anyone on the other side of the conversation. So keep lightening the mood, making new friends, and bringing smiles to other folks' faces. After all, it's just so natural for you!

"Explain God" By An 8 Year-Old Boy

Found this from http://www.thedook.com/index/P52/ and thought that it's interesting. It really shows what is child-like faith.

EXPLAIN GOD by Danny Dutton

One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grown-ups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way He doesn't have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting His time by going over your Mom and Dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have. Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church. Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water and performing miracles and people finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him. But He was good and kind, like His Father and He told His Father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said "O.K." His Dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth so He told Him He didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So He did. And now He helps His Dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones He can take care of Himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God. Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway. If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But... you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases. And... that's why I believe in God.

Back From Camp

Can't believe that today's book-out timing is 1015! Wow...so happy. Anyway, I reached home at around 12 pm...that's about 2 hrs from Mohawk Company to my living room.

A LOT of things have happened within this week in camp...

1.

Found out that the OOT Rec E, is a slacker. He leaves most of the job to J and me...no wonder J is irritated by him. Today, when J asked E for help, E pointed the finger at J! Can't believe that E actually did that! E is asking for trouble for doing that as J has a black belt in Taekwando. J is able to do any kind of kicks just to finish E off. E should count himself lucky that he is still alive.

2.

Got my postings this weekend. I need to go for a re-BMT around the 8th of April. This means that after my friends POP (Passing-Out-Parade or graduate), I will still be in Mohawk Company until the 8th while my friends are posted to other Units. Sad...very sad. But what can I do? Heard that my new Company would still be in BMTC School 2. E got his postings too...he is posted as a Service Medic in Nee Soon Camp. J is still waiting for his postings. Hm...wonder which Company would I go to? Hope that I would get Leopard Company...heard that they are a welfare Company.

3.

Heard a funny story while in camp. There was this guy who is doing his guard duty at night. While walking around the camp, he saw a figure in front of him. He got scared. But nevertheless, he needs to investigate the figure. Following procedures, he shouted "Halt!", followed by "Come over here!". As the figure moved towards him, he got scared and ran away...what kind of guard duty is that...lol.

4.

Went to the Canteen and saw E-Mart for the first time.

5.

Found out that there were ants in my uniform that is kept in my metal cupboard. Had to put them out of the cupboard for a day so that the ants will disperse...gross man.

6.

Did a lot of lousy work as a soldier such as watering the plants and grass (can you believe it? Grass!). Collected ice...swept the Parade Square...man the office phone...so on so forth.

7.

Got my photo of my platoon...didn't have my face in it as I was sick on that day.

8.

Met a lot of other OOTs. There's this guy LS. He got his postings too...not sure to where though. But will sure miss him.

I guess that's all that have happened...would add if I can still remember.

Back To Camp

I will be going back to camp after church later. I am playing the drum for today's service and there will be new songs also. But after church...it's back to camp...lol. By the way...tomorrow is Valentine's Day...

Haha...isn't it weird? I will be spending tomorrow in camp, an all-boys environment (it's a military camp you see). Valentine's Day in the year 2005, my 19th year on earth, in a military camp...lol. The wake-ups at 5.00 am...food in the cookhouse...sweeping of floors...all of these for the next six days with the first day being Valentine's Day. Well, at least I am better off than my friends who actually go through even tough training...so I shouldn't complain that much I guess.

My previous Valentine's Days were just so-so. Nothing spectacular such as going out on single dates or romantic moments depicted in television. They were just like normal days...there were some V Days that were not normal (abnormal sounds bad) in the sense that I actually received gifts!! But they were just normal gifts with no special meaning. They were gifts given by friends...not people who like me. Haha...at least I have friends who cared to give on V Day.

Anyway...I won't be writing anymore entries until this Saturday as I will be in my camp in another small island (the island is known as Pulau Tekong).

For those who have no Valentine like me...well...at least you have friends.
Once again...happy Valentine's Day to all!!

Love Is...

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
New King James Version

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails.

Sure reminds me of what "love" is.

Valentine's Day

Hey...guess what? Next monday is Valentine's Day...lol. Didn't knew that until I checked my calendar for today's date. So what do I expect from that day? Hm...not too sure. I guess Valentine's Day is a day where people exchange tokens of affection. So what's the origin of it actually...well it can be found in http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/valentine/index.jsp?page=home. Hm...quite a few interesting stories there.

Went to Auntie's place at Yio Chu Kang for music practice. My, my brother and three other cousins went there and stayed overnight. Quite a fun experience...especially the sharing session we had with each other where we talked until late into the night...lol. By the time it was morning, everyone was still sleepy...haha. Anyway, seems like my cough got worse...sad man. Just hope that this will resolve by tomorrow...because tomorrow is book-in day...lol.

Chinese New Year Outing With Cousins

Went out with my three cousins yesterday to Bugis. My bro and I reached first and decided to play first. However, the computers that were assigned to us in the LAN center was faulty...in the end we didn't get to play until my cousins reached...sad right? Anyway, we decided to go to another place in Bugis to play....the rate was much higher ($2.00/hour) but they had access to Battle.net. So we thought of playing DOTA over Battle.net. But only three could be in the same server at any time...complained to the boss of that place but he said that there's nothing he could do...we ended up wasting our first hour trying to log in to Battle.net (wasted 2 bucks). But in the end, we still manage to play...not together...but by ourselves...lol.

After playing for around 3 to 4 hours, we went to eat at the Kopitiam. I ordered a plate of pasta (cost $5.80...it was ridiculous...some noodles with sauce for that price. If I get smarter or taller by 5 cm, I won't mind paying the price...but the pasta just made me full, just like the $4.00 noodles my cousin had.) After eating, we decided to go watch a movie...only to find that the next movie was at 7.30 pm. It was 5.30 pm then. Two hours of free time...nothing to do. So we ended up walking all over the place and in the end...we decided to go home...lame.

A Compliment? Maybe Not

Was in camp one day. Then Srgnt A came up to me and asked me to clean the office. While cleaning, he said, "You remind me of a certain Hong Kong actor you know." Hey! That's a compliment man...sure was happy. Even though I may be botak (bald), but here is a man that compliments my looks.

Then he continued by saying, "The actor who always acts like a blur sotong in the movies. The blur blur one...forgot who aldy."

I was stunned.

Chinese New Year And My Wallet

Went to visit my cousins and relatives today...caught up with old times and found out that J is going to NS later on this year (His PES is A). In my cousin's house...we played PS 2 chat and talked a lot of stuff that until now I still can't remember. Collected red packets and counted the money collected. Sadly...the amount is less then last year's.

Anyway, I reached home and unpacked all my red packets...only to discover that...I lost my wallet. Guess what? My 11B (similar to an Identity Card) was in my wallet along with my EZ-link and ATM card. Just imagine how panicky I became...I called the wrong person for help...walked outside without shoes to look for my wallet...and worse still, mistook my auntie for my uncle. In the end...I found it in the car. Just imagine the relief I experienced as losing your 11B can be a serious thing in NS.

Must be more careful next time...is my wallet still here? Yes...it's just beside me now. Good.

What Is Marketing?

Got this from an email...

WHAT IS MARKETING

You see a gorgeous girl at a party.
You go up to her and say, "I am very rich. Marry me!"
That's Direct Marketing

You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl.
One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says, "He's very rich. Marry him."
That's Advertising.

You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day you call and say, "Hi, I'm very rich. Marry me."
That's Telemarketing.

You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl.
You get up and straighten your tie; you walk up to her and pour her a drink.
You open the door for her, pick up her bag after she drops it,offer her a ride, and then say, "By the way, I'm very rich "Will you marry me?"
That's Public Relations.

You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl.
She walks up to you and says, "You are very rich..."
That's Brand Recognition.

You see a gorgeous girl at a party.
You go up to her and say, "I'm rich. Marry me"
She gives you a nice hard slap on your face.

2. Can you make a candle out of your earwax? (Remember the movie Shrek?)
3. Can you get cornered in a round room?
4. Why do companies offer you "free gifts?" Since when has a gift NOT been free?

The Reunion Dinner

Everyone came at around 6.30 pm. We prayed and then started to eat. The food was great. Everyone was happy. Ate mee goreng with rice...my cousins ate some other stuff. We had crysanthemum tea for drinks...lol...so Chinese. Then after eating wanted to play the PS 2 with my cousins...but...all the adults wanted to watch DVD...lol. In the end, we played UNO cards with children aged 3 to 5...what more can we ask for? We ended up explaining to them how to play instead of playing...

1. We told them that the "Reverse" card doesn't mean that you need to turn 180 degrees and face the other way. It just means that the order of turns is reversed.
2. You are not suppose to tell the people around you the cards that you have. Please don't say things like "Yay I am left with one card and it's Green 8.
3. Don't go around biting other people's cards. It's not sporting to do that and at the same time unhygienic for you.

After playing for what seems like a day in a child-care centre, everyone left for home...lol...what a Reunion Dinner it was. Luckily we didn't play Mastermind or else the children will end up eating the "dots".

Weird Trip

Went out with my cousin just now. Weirdest trip ever. We wanted to go to Jurong Point so we boarded the bus 187 from the bus stop on the West Mall side. Then realised that we board the wrong bus...so we alighted from it. After alighting, we board the correct side for bus 187. Then it passed my house. By that time...we were feeling so sian (tired). So we all went to my house instead. Weird huh? A trip ended up in a tour of my neighbourhood.

2. Met a new OOT member...E.
3. Realised that I could sleep even in the MRT.
4. Found that L Coy is a welfare coy.
5. OOT Z is posted to a Commando camp...all the best man Z.

Toy Soldier Held Hostage

Saw a lot of articles on a toy soldier being held hostaged. Realised that there are people around who would do almost anything to achieve their goals...or are just being weird. Holding a toy soldier hostage? Not only is the poor "guy" unable to defend himself...he also won't be able to feel anything if he is tortured or executed. (Executing a doll? Weird man...weird...). At least a real guy was not involved. This reminds me of children in kindergardens. The boys would play with action figures while girls will play with dolls.

Boy: Haha...my GI Joe action figure is the strongest of them all...haha. And look! It has movable arms and legs!

Girl: Oh yeah? Well look at my Barbie doll, it has a wide range of clothes it can change into...from casual to formal to...

Boy fired GI Joe's grenade launcher and made short work of Barbie's Ken.

Girl: What the...

Boy: Haha...Ken deserved it. He is such a softy, hanging out with Barbie dolls throughout his life. He should be like my GI Joe.

Girl screams and slashes Boy's arm with her fingernails. Boy gets scared and drops his GI Joe and went to see the teacher.

Girl: This should teach you not to mess with ME!! But Ken is dead. What a loss for Barbie. Well, at least GI Joe here would make a better replacement. Having movable arms and legs sure beat Ken's plastic head.

Who turned out to be scarier in the end?

Lameness

The two conversations that I had with my friends really made me wonder...is "lameness" something that should be shunned at or accepted? Some may find the two conversations funny while some may be appalled at it. I guess it's really up to the individual's definition of what is funny and what is not.

By the way, I do like certain lame jokes and find them entertaining.

Lame Joke...From Another Lame Friend

Met another friend in camp. His name is M. We had a "funny" conversation.

M: Care for a joke?
Me: Why not?
M: Do you want to see a butterfly fly any time you want?
Me: Is that like...possible?
M: Well...yes.
Me: So what's the trick?
M: It's simple...just take a slice of butter and throw it out of the window...you will see the butter fly. Haha. Get it? Butter fly and butterfly?
Me: You remind me of a friend that I have...who threw apples at doctors.

Guess that they might be good friends if I introduce them to each other...or should I not?

Lame Joke...From A Lame Friend

Was talking to this friend of mine, MY, in camp...

MY: Hey! Do you know why an apple a day keeps the doctor away?
Me: Erm...cos apples are healthy and eating it will keep you free from germs?
MY: Wrong!
Me: Then?
MY: Cos you threw the apple at him!! HAHA!! Funny right?
Me: -_- (Good try man...work harder next time)

Are you laughing?

Tired

Just came back from camp today...feeling very tired man. It's nice to see my friends once again. Heard that M and K are posting out today...haiz...will miss them. Though we spent a few days with each other, yet it can't be denied that there's this friendship that had developed among us OOTs. Hey! Guess what? There's a new OOT joining us today...he's E from M3. He's a nice person so far...at least I won't be the last one posted out...lol (sorry K).

Drum Sticks

Saw my drum sticks today. It is really getting worned out. Have been using it for like...hm...4 years? Anyway, saw that some of my friends have replaced their drum sticks with new ones from Vic Firth and Zildjian. Saw the drum sticks that they used the other time...looks cool. But my drum sticks are...old and worned out. Yet, I seem to like my drum sticks...

I guess as a drummer uses a pair of sticks in his/her playing, he/she will somehow develop a certain kind of bond with it (sounds weird huh?). Before playing the drums, the drummer will look for that pair of drum sticks that has been with him in the fill-ins and solos. Of course, after prolong use, the drum sticks will wear out. Then comes the thought of replacement. Some drummers give no thought about replacing their sticks while some find it extremely difficult to seperate with it. I guess it's the bond that has developed between musician (drummer) and instrument (drum sticks). Replacement of course is inevitable if the sticks break. Broken sticks makes playing the drum difficult and ineffective. But there are some people who still keep their broken drum sticks...these people are seen to be "too extreme" in their love for their drum sticks.

Would you keep your drum sticks even though they are broken?

Loss Of Appetite

Can't believe I only ate a slice of bread and drank a cup of apple juice! Guess that I have lost my appetite. Used to remember how I would eat lots of food before becoming sick...lol...so much that I become bloated. Heard from my parents that "You need to eat a lot of food in your growing up years". Well...I guess this period of sickness is an exception.

Later on I will be seeing the Specialist on Respiratory System...hope that he will be able to find the cause of all of this.

A Call At Night

Last night was horrible. Coughed badly until the chest pains grew worse. Heard from previous doctors that excessive coughs will strain the chest muscles...this might be the reason for the chest pains...or is it? Left home at around 11.30 pm. The doctor could not detect the cause of it (just like previous doctors since childhood) and said that I had a viral infection in the respiratory tract. Gave me Panadol and told me to rest and drink lots of water. Reached home at around 2.30 am. Went for the bed...zzz...

Today, the chest pains lingered on...can you believe it? One night is still not enough for the chest muscles to "un-strain" itself? Guess that it might take sometime to recover...hopefully soon.

Anyway, last night, amidst the violent coughs and horrible chest pains with breathlessness, someone called me. I was so touched. The caller was my NS Buddy, Goh ZY (Thanks man for calling...really appreciate it). He called to say "how are you?" and "take care". Though these may be simple words, but they really mean a lot to me - someone who is seperated from my NS bunk mates by a health condition. That call somehow managed to ease the pain a little...remembering that my bunk mates in Tekong still remembers me. I really appreciate the constant care and concern that they showed me even tough I spent most of my time at home due to my health. Then there's Lee HQ Jthr, he used to ask "how are you? ok anot?"...simple words like these really mean a lot to me.

Once again, I would like to show my appreciation to all my bunk mates for their continual support. Even though they say that "bond between brothers is built after three months", I beg to differ. Despite my rare appearence in Tekong, I can still feel that there's a bond between us Section 4. Thanks a lot guys...

NUS

Hm...been thinking of going to NUS. But heard that there will be high competition. Especially in good Faculties such as Science, Engineering and not forgetting Medicine and Dentistry. Hope that my GCE A Level results are good. Unlike my GCE O Level result. That time Prelim scored so well but O Level...disappointing.

So what Faculties should I go into? Been thinking of either Science or Engineering. Most probably I would go to Engineering, as I find that Engineering students are able to apply whatever they have learnt into real life situations. Those in Science Faculty just only learn with less application...at least that's what I heard...I may be wrong though.

In the Engineering Faculty...I would apply for either Bioengineering or Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I choose these two as I am interested in both Biology and Chemistry.

Hopefully when the GCE A Level results are out...it will be an occasion to rejoice.

Unlucky Friend

Haha...whenever I think of it...it really makes me laugh. This guy called "Jack" (Not his real name to protect his identity), experienced something not many of us would. He told me after pestering him for quite some time...lol. I will try to write in the first person to make the story more interesting...lol...

Hi, my name is Jack. Lol...something...happened to me the other time. And it was only through my friend's persistence that I am sharing this story. It happened on December 2003 or 2004...

I was selected to go for this seminar in this University. Upon reaching there, we were introduced to our rooms. Because this seminar was a one week seminar, we had to stay overnight in our allocated rooms. In the same room is another guy...didn't meet him though...he may be in on his way here. So anyway...we spent the whole day learning music and stuff like that. At night time, we retired to our own rooms...the guy in the same room with me is still not there...he may be vary busy I guess. Anyway, I decided to take a bath...

I grabbed my toiletries and towel and looked for the toilet. Since it was my first time there, I didn't know the place quite well. After walking for a while, I found one. So entered it and went into a cubicle and started to bathe. While bathing half-way, I could hear someone entering into a cubicle. The person who entered bathed quite fast as I could hear the cubicle door open soon after that.

After bathing, I opened the door and went out. Just at that time, someone entered the cubicle beside me. I didn't really care. As I went to the sink to wash my hands...there before me was a woman!! She was applying some cream on her face when she saw me...lol. I was like...stoning. What was even worse was that I was wearing my school uniform!! Oh man!! You tell me what I should do!! She was staring at me and I was staring at her...luckily she was wearing something, a bath robe to be precise. So I presume that she was the one who had entered the cubicle and bathed so fast. I tell you man...I wish that I was buried under a mountain. Sadly, there are none in Singapore...Bukit Timah would not be enough. So I was like "Erh...sorry...sorry...didn't know that this is the Female Toilet". She didn't say a thing...she continued looking at me. Without any delay, I walked out of the toilet and wondered how on Earth did I get into such a mess!!

Soon after that...I got a fever and was sent back home.

HAHAHA...funny man...the poor Jack. Still couldn't believe that he experienced such a thing. I am truly speechless. Heard from Jack that that woman didn't report that incident to the police. If she had reported...not only would Jack be in trouble, but his school as well...lol. The Straits Times would feature his face...sad case man Jack...sad case.

A Funny Incident

I am a Christian, a Protestant to be more exact. I play the drums in this church near Dhoby Gaut. It is an Indonesian Church...lol...your must be wondering why am I in an Indonesian Chruch. Well I grew up in Indonesia and grew to be like them in certain aspects.

Well, there was this embarrassing incident. Still remembered this even after so long...

There was once when my mother was the worship leader and me as the drummer. She sang the final song and suddenly everyone came to a stop...except for me! As a drummer, our instruments would definitely be noticed especially when there's silence. I was puzzled...wondering why everyone had stopped only to realise that the song had finished. I guess I was not paying attention at that time. I was so paiseh at that time...wished that I could hide myself in the drum set. Everybody just looked at me with those eyes that seemed to say "You daydreaming arh?" Oh man...luckily my mum was ok with it.

Thanks God that they still allowed me to play the drum...haha.

Blogging

Been blogging since Sunday, 30th January 2005. Writings by me published in one corner of the Internet. There were some entries that I find interesting and others that would make me say "That was just a waste of time". Nevertheless, one thing's for sure. Blogging has made the creative juices flow.

Some people set up blogs to advertise and make money. Some have blogs that talk about their lives and the things that they encounter. There are also interesting blogs that talk about current issues...politics...food...and even NS...haha. Whatever their reason is for setting up a blog, they have their reasons for doing so.

I hope that my writing skills would eventually improve after blogging for sometime. Never knew that writing and publishing your ideas could be so much fun...especially when you are sick at home with nothing much to do...lol.

Reunion Dinner

Once again...that day is finally almost here. Red packets...mandarin oranges...visitations...all of these are common in Chinese New Year. But there's also the Reunion Dinner.

I still remember how I used to go around with my family...visiting relatives and collecting red packets. Haha...when I was small...I just wanted to go for the red packets and would pester my parents to go home after that. It took me to realise that actually it's more than the red packet. You might say that the red packet is a "bonus" in Chinese New Year. But what's more important is that relatives get down to talk and catch up on old times. This event once every year made sure that family members maintain contact with eah other.

Then there's the Reunion Dinner. Heard from my father that it is a very important tradition that the Chinese follow. He even told me a story...

"There was once a family in Singapore. It was a Chinese family. New Year's Eve was around the corner. Hence they decided to have their Reunion Dinner then. However...all but one of the family members were missing. Nevertheless, they gathered around their table and talked about how that family member would fare. That family member was studying overseas and told them that he might be late for the Reunion Dinner. Even so, they placed his bowl and a pair of chopsticks at his place. When the time for waiting was up, they began their dinner, with the bowl and chopsticks there...just hoping that he would come in through the door and join the family. Alas...he did not return. He was late...and returned only the next day."

Personally, this story was able to drive the point that the Reunion Dinner is an important event. Even family members who were seperated by countries would ensure that they would return for the Reunion Dinner.

I guess the Reunion Dinner is an important event for the current society...especially when families no longer eat together. What is a family if you can't even spend time having meals with them? The lack of family time may explain the current rise in the number of dysfunctional families in Singapore.

Some may say that traditions are for those who are old-fashioned. But for me, I feel that if the tradition is good...why not follow it? For example...the tradition of giving out red packets is definitely good for me...having the Reunion Dinner is also another good tradition. It allows us family members to spend quality time together. Even though you may say "What's there to talk about? You see your family members everyday!", I still feel that it's the closeness and bond of the family that I really treasure. They are the people whom you can turn to in times of trouble. The people who will lend you a helping hand.

So do treasure your family.

NJCSB

Chatted with my Percussion friends last night. Sure brought back memories...

"Eln"
My Percussion Section Leader. Very bubbly and likes to laugh a lot...lol. Helped us with stuff that we didn't know. (Eg, she taught me on the mallets...bells to be more precise for Glitzville). Believed in us and really supported us all through the way. Is she fierce? Not really lah...actually quite a nice person. Brought stuff for the section during SYF and gave a pep talk before it. Really fortunate to haev such a capable young women to be our Section Leader.

"Sn"
The only other guy in my Percussion section who came in NJCSB in 2003. Real funny person...would tell lame jokes such as "What is red and green and travels at 70 mph?" and "What can you find in a clean nose?". Sometimes he would teach me on how to play the Timpany as I need to learn it for some songs...which I forgot. He is also my House Captain (Aqua House). During House Sessions...can see him leading the whole house into mayhem...lol (joking). But a real nice person...can still remember the "cakes" he bought from Malaysia when he came back...it was really nice. Don't know whether Singapore got sell a not.

"PK"
This is another Percussion friend from the same batch as me...lol...can still remember when we were called to be "Honourary Drummers" for our school's National Day Celebrations. The training was horrible in that it would last from 5 pm to around 6.30 pm...as if the school's long timetable was not taxing enough already. But in the end we pulled through it...lol. Can still remember how we panicked when we didn't know when to start the drum roll...haha. She's also quite a nice person...like to laugh a lot. Sometimes laugh for no reason...but it's good lah in the sense that she would lighten the mood of the section.

"Stphn"
An ordinary percussion member. Still remembered him playing the drum set for "The Final Countdown" and "Tubthumping"...quite nice. He is sometimes quiet but his lameness can be irritating at times. This can be seen when he told a lame joke to someone interested in joining Percussion during our school's open house. That person was irritated...after that that person didn't come back again...lol. Careful with your lameness man.

"Thms"
Ah...the new Section Leader...hope that you are still doing well. A nice person and a lame one too. Sometimes he would tell lame jokes while the section laughs. Played the drum set for most of the pieces. One of the juniors who would call me an "IP student". Another nice person too...still remembered on how he would help me to buy drinks from the canteen during band practices. Still remembered that I was the one whom he approached when he stepped into the band for his first time...lol.

"Yln"
Another pro Percussionist. Skillful in most of the instruments. Really a boost to the NJC percussion section. I remembered telling her the "Donkey on the Clift" lame joke and she laughed...lol...wasn't expecting that. I expected her to stone...lol. She was the one who called me "IP Student" the most...infecting the others to follow suit. Whenever there was an announcement for IP students whe would say "Eh...I think it's for you leh"...lol.

"Shrn"
Another person with a bubbly character. Still remembered how she had trouble with the tambourine part for "Puzsta". Tried to coach her...but it wasn't easy as I myself am not a major in the tambourine. But in the end with her determination and resilience, she managed to play quite well. Thanks for your effort. Well...another junior who ended up calling me an "IP Student"

"Jnn"
I remembered how she would say "IP Student" with a certain funny accent...lol. Sometimes she would stone but actually she's meditating for the next piece...lol (joking). A junior who can't stand my lameness...haha...sorry that you need to cope with that. A major in mallets...played quite well for the Percussion Ensemble.

"Pl"
Ah...the "cool" junior...lol. Another junior who called me an IP student...lol. Plays the accessories and sometimes the drums. Still remembered how Pl, Thms and me used to wait for the bus...especially after the long night practices...but normally they usually get to board first...leaving me to rot there...lol. A real fun person to be with...sometimes can be quite serious though...must loosen a bit and enjoy yourself in NJC before you come to NS...haha.

So this is the Percussion Section that I grew up in during the years of 2004. I don't really mind the juniors calling me "IP Student"...lol...at least they bothered to disturb me.

Oh yah...how can one ever forget the seniors who guided us to what we are.

"Ejn"
The Section Leader before Eln. Very funny person...but can get serious at time. Played the drum set for "An American In Paris"...had a fantastic solo too. Nice person...organised section dinners and outings. Still remembered the face when she was stressed up...haha...a lot of "Argh...forgot to do my Econs hmwk" or "Argh...forgot to clean the cymbals" or "Argh...wad was that for?" Relax man...don't get too worked up...bad for your face. I still remembered her advice during the AGM "Don't stick to your beloved suspend cymbals...try the other instruments"...lol.

"ZhX"
Another senior...quite nice too. Played cymbals with me for our SYF piece. It was fun working with her. At times I need to switch suspend cymbal sticks with her...at times I would get lost in the music itself and need her to help me get back to where the band was...thanks a lot man. Don't really know how she is now...but all the best in your future endeavours.

"MngFng"
Ah...the funny senior whose lameness is unbeatable. Very funny and lame person...most of the time, he would crack lame jokes and the whole section would laugh. Quite a capable person too...able to juggle SC and Band. Once he helped me......I forgot in what but he did help me...I know it sounds a bit lame...but he did helped me.

"Chryl"
A senior who took the same subject combi as me. Quite nice person too who would help me at times with my academic stuff, giving me tips for certain exams and stuff like that. I remember her playing the tambourine for our SYF piece...she had trouble rolling the tambourine but managed to in the end...lol...until now I still can't do that. At times may tell lame jokes too...but would laugh at them herself with one or two other people. I know how you feel Chryl...I experienced it before...lol.

"QP"
Another senior who helped us play in the SYF...played the temple blocks. Quiet at times...but when u talk to her, she will talk to you. Sometimes she would laugh and smile by the jokes that the section would share. Normally she will play the accessories for most of the songs...may be she is trying to master them.

Then there's this two juniors who left us after the first three months...

"Chrs"
Likes to laugh a lot...really a lot. One lame joke and she will explode, laughing. At times her laughter can be so loud that the conductor would stop and look at our section. So how's life man? Hope that you will be fine in your new school and new environment. Another junior who called me an "IP Student".

"Brdy"
This guy is a very good percussionist. Played the snare drum for the "Rosa" piece in his secondary school. But left half-way...in the end I was asked to play this difficult part...lol. Chatted with him yesterday and he still remembers what we talked about in KAP...lol. Nice and friendly person who is willing to help.

The MRT

The MRT can be an interesting place. There are a lot of people whom you can meet in the MRT. And if you have observed long enough...you can even classify them into certain groups.

"Sleeping Beauties"
This group of people can be found sleeping. Most of them fall asleep right when an old woman or a pregnant lady approaches them. Some however are genuinely asleep. If you are lucky enough, you can even find people sleeping while standing up. They choose to do this while leaning against the support near the doors. But there are some who sleep without any support. They must be leading a very stressed up life.

"Kopitiam Uncles"
This group consists of those who like to talk loudly on their mobile phones. Most of them converse in Hokkien while some converse in Chinese. They can get quite violent at times, especially when they get too engrossed in their conversation. Some of them may swing their arms in frustration while others utter some vulgarities, only to be stared at by the rest of the commuters.

"Bo Chap People"
A majority of the commuters belong to this group. They are just busy with their own thing. They board...and alight without any commotion. You can say that this group of people are the most boring ones as they just keep to themselves only.

"Students"
Ah...how can one forget this group of people? They are the future of Singapore. They can be from primary schools, secondary schools, JC/ITE students and Uni students. Uni students are hard to pick out as they don't have any uniforms. But the rest are quite easy to spot. At times they can get rowdy and laugh out loud, disturbing the commuters around and the auntie who is trying to sleep. Then there are those who can be seen studying...muggers...a term used to describe such people. Every once in a while you can find them, busy memorising facts and figures. Trying to imprint into their minds the Mendel's Law of Independent Segregation. Last but not least are the group of students who can be found holding hands. They can be quite "aggressive" in public. To the extent that commuters around them need to remind them that they are in public. Whispering sweet nothings and holding hands...these are obviously couples in school.

"Pregnant Ladies and Senior Citizens"
Hm...the group of people that is feared by some. When approached, those sitting down either fall asleep immediately or get up and offer their seats. It is not difficult to spot one of them. Initially this group of people would just smile and say no to the one offering their seats...but if the one giving up his seat insists, they will just choose to sit. Human behaviour...may be they are practising reverse psychology? Woah...if this is true...then these Senior Citizens can be used to utilise their reverse psychology skills. Who says that Senior Citizens are a burden?

"Couples"
These are people who are attached (duh!). Most of them know how to behave in public...not crossing the boundary. But there are some of them that are way too much...to the extent that the MRT is no longer a wholesome form of transportation for kids and toddlers. Parents can be seen trying to distract their children from the "scene" but to no avail as being kids, they are curious of the world around them.

I guess that's all I can think of. There may be some other types of people. Who knows? As society progresses, people with new types of characteristics and personalities would appear.

So...an MRT can be more than just a form of transportation. It can open your eyes to the different types of people found in the Heartland.

Spectacles

Can't really see that well without my specs. It's about 125 on both eyes. So I guess it's not that bad after all. Some of my friends are quite sad...their eyes are around 2000 on both. I wonder what they will ever do without their specs. Anyway what would life be like if spectacles were not invented?

1. People like me won't be able to see clearly.
2. There will be less soldiers...with a deficient eyesight, they will be severely handicapped.
3. Television might be modified such that people with myopia will be able to see them.
4. People would not be able to recognise each other from afar.
5. Archery will no longer be a sport.
6. There will be less snipers in the world.
7. People going for corrective eye surgery would increase. (This would solve problems 1 to 6)

The thought of putting a lens in front of your eye lens seems interesting. It is like putting another "eye" in front of your eyes. Maybe this is how the term "four-eyes" originated.

After the emergence of the specs...there came "contact lenses". It is really much more convenient to have contact lens rather than specs as they are much more comfortable. Some people are allergic to contact lens and hence have no choice but to stick to specs. But with the emergence of the contact lens, more and more people are opting for it.

After the contact lens, came corrective eye surgery...there are risks involved as it has not been perfected yet. Not only is the process expensive, it also involves a lot of risk. It is a one-try only procedure. It involves modified (or changing) the shape of the cornea such that when light diffracts through it, it is focused unto the fovea located on the retina.

Who knows? In the future Mankind might invent something or come up with new procedures to correct such eye conditions. They might even have a re-sizable lens located on the cornea or a mini-lens embedded in the cornea. You never know.

Can't Sleep

Haiz...tried to sleep just now but can't. Feeling feverish...sore throat just got worse from yesterday and feeling feverish. Hard to sleep...in the end, end up tossing here and there. So that's why I am here writing another entry for my blog...

It's hard to be sick. There are a lot of things that you can't do. For example, you can't go out...can't eat your favourite food...can't sleep well...and a lot more. Lol...I really sound like some old man who has retired. But I hope that I won't be like that for long.

Interestingly, my mind wonders around when I can't sleep (I don't know is it just me or do other people experience the same thing). From NS it can wonder until NJC...then to my trip to Medan and later to tomorrow's TV program. Interesting huh? The brain (or at least my brain) seems to be able o wonder of to thoughts that are not planned in the first place. So how does it proceed on to that particular thought? To make things clearer, I will use an example...

Let us say that my brain is now thinking about my sickly condition. After tossing in bed (since I can't sleep), the brain proceeds on to NS. So the question is, how did my brain proceed from "sickly condition" to "NS"? I didn't plan to think about "NS", but it just went on to "NS". Hm...interesting right?

While this may be some neurology field, but in my humble opinion, I feel that it reaches "NS" from "sickly condition" by "linking". (Lol...some new term). Anyway, to me this "linking" is somewhat the bridge that connects different thoughts together. Allow me to explain...

When I was thinking on my "sickly condition", I begin to think on how on Earth did I get it. That led me to what caused my "sickly condition". I was sick since I was in NS, so naturally my brain would associate the cause with NS. (It might not be due to NS. It might be due to some other factors. But the fact that I was down with a fever in NS, caused my brain to associate the cause with NS). So that's how the thought seems to "jump" from "sickly condition" to "NS"...all because of "linking".

If this is true...then it can be used to explain how people's thoughts seem to wonder around. It can even be used to explain "daydreaming" that one experiences.

Haha...this is totally weird...that a sick man would be able to talk about such "chim" stuff...lol. Ouch! I think the pain in my chest just came back...lol...must be too much thinking already. Guess I will stop here and write again some other time.

Note: Linking can be seen in this whole entry. From the title of "Can't Sleep" all the way to the concept of "linking".

(I am sorry if some of you don't really understand what I am trying to say...it's just something that I thought of and would like to share in my blog.)

Different Lives

Life in Singapore is a truly hectic one. One would wake up in the morning, rush to school/work. After that he/she would come back home with a few hours of leisure time, before retiring to sleep. The next day, the cycle would repeat itself. This would be the life of an average Singaporean. The day starts at around 7 am and ends at around 7 pm

However, the life of an Indonesian (in Medan, Sumatra) is truly different. He/she would wake up late in the morning, open his/her shop. Waits for customers...and eventually, closes shop in the evening. Goes back to home and brings the family for an outing or to a restaurant to eat. After that they will come back home and rest. This would be the life of an average Indonesian. The day starts at around 10 am and ends at around 5 pm.

From here we can see that both groups of people have different lives, some may prefer the Singaporean way while others may prefer the Indonesian way. But it is of no doubt that both lives are different. So, what will happen if one from each group were to meet one another......

(Before I begin...this is just an imaginary scenario. So please do not be offended by it.)

A Singaporean was resting in a kopitiam when suddenly a foreigner came and sat at the same table. Not wanting to make enemies, the Singaporean made use of what he had learned in the "Good Courtesy Campaign" held long ago.

Sg: Hi, my name is Jack Tan, hope can be friend friend with you.

Indo: Oh...hi Slack. Me name is Rinsoplast Rusmanto Hartandi.

Sg: Er...Rinso what?

Indo: Aiyah...you can just call me Rinso then. You are Slack right?

Sg: No...it's not Slack. It's Jack, J-A-C-K, Jack.

And that was a somewhat good start between our two friends.

Rinso: Wah...udah benar benar lapar nih. Sorry, what I mean is that me am super hungry.

Jack: I go and take pasta.

Rinso: Aku pergi ambil mie pansit dulu.

After choosing a place to sit, they started to eat.

Rinso: Jack, why you eat so fast? Careful don't get choke and die...haha. We normally eat very slow one. Try to enjoy the food and talk with the people around the table.

Jack: Cannot lah, must rush through the food. Life in Singapore like that one.

Rinso: Relax lah...you must take care of yourself. Later choke or kena indigestion how?

Jack: I get your point. Hey...your noodles and mine very different huh.

Rinso: Oh yah...kayaknya different leh. This one call mie pansit. Something like your wanton mee...only nicer.

Jack: This one here we call pasta. Some french noodle with a lot of tomato sauce. Oh yah...in Singapore arh...you can't take things slowly one. For us, we rush here and there, work hard like crazy if not the bank chase us and we gone case liao. You do things so slow, walk slowly, careful don't let car knock you man. Our car also very fast one. That's why we got speed limit lah...and must wear seat belts in the car.

Rinso: Aduh...really pity your people. For us in kampong, no car one. We use bicycle. So no car accident. Life very easy one. But if we get into trouble we just pay "uang kopi" or bribe them. The police happy, I happy, everybody senang senang.

Jack: Wah...so nice arh? Down here ar if you try to bribe the police, you go jail straight away. The police here super on one. That's why they got award like big plasma TV in their station.

Rinso: Really arh? So good. But I think my system better lah. Oh yah...how come your name so short one?

Jack: Short? More like your name is long loh. Don't know what Rinso...

Rinso: Aduh...our names are like that one...funny funny one. Some got long some got short name. Aku got one friend his name is called "Garpu" which means "Fork". I think the parents want him to provide food for the family. Then ada cewek...I mean girl call "Rumah" which means "House". The parents may want her to be a housewife. Gitulah.

Jack: Haha...same here loh. I got friends who are called "Ah Gu" meaning "Cow" and some call "Ai Swee" meaning "Vain". Sometimes we laugh and make fun of their names...haha...so farny.

Rinso: Waduh...time no more already. I need to go back to farm and help my boss feed the chicken. Nice talking with you...enaknya bisa ngomong lagi.

Jack: Oh yah hor...now that you mentioned it...I also need to go and collect protection money. Ok lah...jin song kak lu kong wa. Bye.

Rinso: Sampai jumpa.

Bad Flu

Don't really know why but these few days I always have a flu in the morning. Maybe I am still sick that's why. But I heard that if someone is really sick, a fever would accompany whatever symptoms he might be showing. So I guess I am just unwell...haha. If this was the case back in the SARS period that we experience, a lot of attention would be given to the guy who got the flu. Consider this scenario.

Teacher: Class, please take out the Ketones worksheet that I gave you yesterday. I presume that all of you have done it.

A: Eh...B, I never do leh...how? Now a bit scared aldy. Last time this teacher always talk a lot...say want to do this and do that to those who never do their work. But recently I heard tt she will bring those who never do to see HER.

B: (Displaying a shocked face) You mean...HER? As in HER....the HER that we all...fear?"

Teacher: Aloh...you two...wad are the two of you talking about?

A and B: Nothing Cher.

B: Yah...I know. Now SARS period right? Why don't you...

A: Hehe...I know what you talking about. Ok...ok.

Teacher: A arh...you like take so long to take your homework. Did you like left it at home?

A: No Cher. But I am think I am sick. Not feeling well lah...throat a bit sore, cough (pretends to cough) and I think I may have a fever.

Teacher: You sure anot? Go outside the class and measure your temperature.

B goes outside and takes his temperature. However, the temperature would not go above 36.7. In order to qualify for the semi-finals....erm I mean fever, B needs to achieve a minimum temperature of 37.5 and above.

B: Oh man...why won't the temperature go up? If continue like that...I will get into trouble. Haiz.

Then a stroke of genius (or should I say craftiness) hit B. He took out the thermometer and rubbed it. To his delight, temperature easily shot up to above 37.5. Feeling unsatisfied, he continued rubbing it until it reached 39.1.

B: Teacher sure ask me to go home one. Hehe. Now I just need to act sick. My face adjust a bit here and there...

B walks into the classroom.

Teacher: So how's your temperature?

B: (Cough)...Cher (Cough even louder) my temperature is 39.1 (Cough like until want to die)

Teacher: I think you better go home. You won't want to infect the other students here.

B: Yes teacher...thanks for your understanding.

With that B packs his bag and dragged his feet out of the classroom. Once outside, he ran to the bus stop and went to MacDonald's and eat.
